Counseling Studies, Bethel College Kansas

Students who are interested in working in entry-level practical work in helping professions or preparation for graduate studies in services or mental health would benefit from a counseling studies minor.  It is also a good choice for students in other disciplines to develop practical skills for care-related professions.  Students who complete this minor will:

  • Be prepared to sensitively and responsively engage and interact with diverse population groups in service delivery.
  • Understand social and psychological approaches to counseling and the ethical considerations that may come with these interactions
  • Integrate professional knowledge across disciplinary boundaries (psychology, social work, education, dispute resolution)
  • Use skills in listening, interviewing, and facilitating groups in an agency context

This minor is through the Social Work department, and designed in collaboration with the psychology department, and includes coursework in social work, psychology, and related disciplines (depending on student interest).  If you are interested in a career in counseling, please contact the Chair of the Social Work Department, Dr. Jennifer Chappell Deckert.
