Crafting Words, Creating Worlds in Literary Studies

Language is a huge part of expressing ourselves and understanding the world. As an English major at Bethel College, you’ll dive into how language shapes our thoughts and communicates ideas in books and everyday life. This major helps you develop strong thinking and communication skills, perfect for careers in teaching, business, journalism, law, library science, social work, ministry, and more. Pairing English with Communication Arts makes for an even stronger career path. The English department connects readers, writers, texts, traditions, and individuals and communities.

What You’ll Learn as an English Major

By the time you finish your English major, you’ll be able to:

  • Engage with Literature: Read and talk about a wide range of literary works, from classics to modern texts, with an eye on social justice and inclusivity.
  • Write Creatively and Scholarly: Create creative and academic writing, showing off your analytical skills and critical thinking.

English Major Requirements

  • Major Requirements: Complete 33 hours (27 hours of required courses plus 6 hours of electives) within the Bachelor of Arts degree.
  • Foreign Language: Complete eight hours of a foreign language or prove you know another language well enough through an exam.

Writing and Publishing Minor

When you complete the Writing and Publishing minor, you’ll:

  • Develop Professional Skills: Get good at writing and editing.
  • Get Hands-On Experience: Work on tasks like layout and design.
  • Work in Publishing: Join professional internships to gain real-world experience.

Minor Requirements

  • Coursework: The minor requires 16 hours of coursework.

Bethel’s Writing and Publishing minor helps you develop professional skills through creative writing, editing/publishing, and graphic design courses. You’ll get valuable experience with internships and hands-on projects. This minor will show future employers you have essential writing and publishing skills. In your final semester, you’ll complete a professional portfolio and either give a public reading or submit your best work for publication.
