Overview

Bethel College is committed to providing an educational and employment environment that is free from discrimination based on protected characteristics, harassment, and retaliation for engaging in protected activity.

Bethel College values and upholds the equal dignity of all members of its community and strives to balance the rights of the Parties in the resolution process during what is often a difficult time for all involved.

To ensure compliance with federal, state, and local civil rights laws and regulations, and to affirm its commitment to promoting the goals of fairness in all aspects of the education program or activity, Bethel College has developed policies and procedures that provide a prompt, fair, and impartial resolution of allegations of protected characteristic discrimination, harassment, or retaliation.

This page is an overview of the Equal Opportunity, Harrassment & Non-Discrimination policy found in the Bethel College Employee Handbook. Instructions for how to access the full policy can be found below.

Internal Reporting

If you would like to file a report of harassment, discrimination, sexual misconduct, dating/domestic violence, stalking, or retaliation, you may do so through the following options:

  1. File the report or complaint in person with the Title IX Coordinator

    Janet Fulmer
    Administration Building — main floor
    titleixcoordinator@bethelks.edu
    (316) 284-5248

  2. File a report or complaint using the online form.
    • The online form may be filled out by the Complainant or a witness to notify the Title IX office of a suspected incident.
    • Online reports may be filed anonymously, however, that will greatly impact the College’s ability to investigate and resolve many issues.

External Reporting

Bethel College strongly encourages all members of the community to report any crimes immediately to law enforcement. However, the college recognizes that everyone has the choice to make such a report or decline police involvement or notification.

If you choose to contact the police, you have several options for how that interaction can take place. When you call 9-1-1, you can request that an officer contact you by phone first, allowing you to decide how and where you would like to provide your statement. Officers can meet you on campus, at the police station, or at another neutral location – whichever setting feels most comfortable for you. The North Newton Police Department also has trauma-informed investigators who are trained to ask questions and gather information with care and sensitivity, even in the most difficult circumstances.

Mandatory Reporting

All other employees are mandatory reporters and are required to notify the Title IX Coordinator of any incidents of actual or suspected discrimination or harassment.

All employees of Bethel College other than the Student Wellness Counselor(s) and the Campus Pastor are considered mandatory reporters. This means they are required to share information that you have disclosed to them with the Title IX Coordinator, though that does not obligate you to any formal involvement. The Title IX Coordinator will simply reach out to you to offer supportive measures and the opportunity to explore your options. The duty of a mandatory reporter stems from the College’s commitment to getting students and employees the information and resources they need to make an informed decision about next steps.

Community Assistants (CA’s) are also mandatory reporters and are required to share information with the Title IX Coordinator.

Closing Remarks

In closing, Bethel College wants you to know that you do not have to navigate this difficult situation alone. There are people on campus who are here to help. Please remember that coming and asking for help or answers to questions does not mean you are obligated to do anything further. Our goal is to provide you information and resources to be able to make an informed decision that is best for you.
