Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, and the federal regulations adopted under the act, prohibit sex discrimination in the employment setting. The regulations define sexual harassment in the workplace as a distinct type of employment discrimination on the basis of sex. In 1980, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) issued guidelines defining sexual harassment and stipulating that sexual harassment in the workplace is a violation of Title VII.
Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972 prohibits discrimination on the basis of sex, including sexual harassment and sexual violence, in any educational programs and activities of educational institutions that receive federal funding. Bethel College students and employees are covered by Title IX.
Common Title IX Questions
- What should I do if I believe I have been subject to sexual harassment, sexual violence or any form of sexual discrimination?
- What process will be followed to resolve my complaint?
- Contact the Title IX Coordinator or any Bethel College employee. If you have been sexually assaulted or are in physical danger, call #911.
- If you decide to file a formal complaint, the Title IX Coordinator will present your complaint to the Title IX Committee, who will determine if an investigation is warranted.
- If an investigation is warranted, the accused and witnesses will be interviewed.
- Information collected during the investigation will be presented to the Title IX Committee, who will make a determination and recommend actions to the appropriate vice president.
- Parties are notified of the Title IX Committee decision.
