Band concert to feature music from the 20th century

The Bethel College Wind Ensemble will give a musical lead-in to the Thanksgiving holidays with a concert Nov. 21 at 7 p.m. in Krehbiel Auditorium in Luyken Fine Arts Center.

Joel Boettger, director of bands, conducts the ensemble in a program that includes works by all composers from the 20th century: Leonard Bernstein, Ralph Vaugh Williams, Michael Sweeney, Philip Sparke and Frank Ticheli.

On the program is “Slava!” by Bernstein, written in celebration and honor of Mstislav Rostropovich beginning his tenure as conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra in 1977.

The Bethel College Wind Ensemble closes out the school year tonight at 7 p.m. in Krehbiel Auditorium in Luyken Fine Arts Center.

The program is free and open to the public, with a freewill offering taken to support music study and performance at Bethel College.

The concert will also be livestreamed on Bethel’s YouTube channel.

Joel Boettger directs the Wind Ensemble.

On the program is “Jinx” by Ryan George; “Chorale and Alleluia” by Howard Hanson; “Tricycle” by Andrew Boyson Jr.; “Dusk” by Stephen Bryant; and “Havana Nights” by Randall Standridge.

Boettger brings Wichita talent to Bethel campus for jazz recital

Director of bands Joel Boettger will give a faculty jazz recital tonight at 7 p.m. in Krehbiel Auditorium, backed by several friends from the Wichita music scene.

The concert is free and open to the public.

Playing along with Boettger on saxophone will be William Flynn, director of jazz studies at Wichita State University, on guitar; Steve Hatfield, instructor of jazz drum set at WSU, on drums; and Chris Shaw on upright bass.

The set list includes a mixture of standards and one original composition.

The Bethel College Wind Ensemble will wrap up February with a program of music for band, Monday, Feb. 28, at 7 p.m. in Krehbiel Auditorium in Luyken Fine Arts Center on the Bethel campus, with Joel Boettger directing.

Current Bethel COVID protocols require face coverings indoors regardless of vaccination status and physical distancing to the extent possible.

On the program is “Air for Band” by Frank Erickson, “In C Dorian” by Frank Ticheli, “Sheltering Sky” by John Mackey, “Vanishing Point” by Randall Standridge and “Nobles of the Mystic Shrine” by John Philip Sousa.

Jazz returns to the Green

Wrapping up three planned outdoor programs over four days, large and small jazz groups will play in the open air, weather permitting.

The concert is May 5 at 7 p.m. Instead of using a mobile stage pulled onto the Green, the groups will set up on the slab to the east of the Regier Art Gallery in Luyken Fine Arts Center.

Concert-goers should bring chairs or blankets to sit on the grass on the Green’s south end, facing the fine arts center. In case of rain, the concert moves to Krehbiel Auditorium, inside the building.

Senior saxophone recital set for April 24

Caleb Abbott will give his senior recital Saturday at 7 p.m. in Krehbiel Auditorium in Luyken Fine Arts Center.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Abbott, Wichita, is a student of Joel Boettger, Bethel College instructor of saxophone.

Abbott is scheduled to graduate from Bethel May 16, 2021, with a degree in music performance.

In his recital, he will offer a selection of classical and jazz pieces by Alexander Glazunov, Victor Morosco, Wayne Shorter and Guy Wood & Robert Mellin, as well as an original composition.
