Two Bethel-connected steel drum bands will help close out musical semester

The sound of steel drums will fill Krehbiel Auditorium as student and community musicians finish out the semester with a musical bang, tonight at 7 p.m.

The concert is free and open to the public, with a freewill offering taken to help support care and maintenance of the steel pans.

The mostly community-member band Steel Paradise will play first, followed by the Bethel College Steel Drum Band. Brad Shores directs both groups.

Steel Paradise’s set list starts with two folk songs, “Everybody Loves a Saturday Night” (Nigeria) and “Guantanamera” (Cuba).

Plan to hear the Steel Drum Band Tuesday, Dec. 7, join the Messiah sing on Wednesday, Dec. 8, and welcome back Christmas Gala Jazz on Friday, Dec. 10, all live on the Bethel campus.

Traditional Christmas music events had to be cancelled in 2020, but they’re all coming back in real life this year.

On Tuesday, Dec. 7, Brad Shores will lead the Bethel College Steel Drum Band in their holiday concert at 7 p.m. in Krehbiel Auditorium in Luyken Fine Arts Center.

Because of chilly temperatures, the Steel Drum Band concert will move inside to Krehbiel Auditorium this evening at 7.

Bethel’s steel drums will play their first in-person concert in 18 months Tuesday, May 4 (originally planned for the plaza outside Luyken Fine Arts Center, where Krehbiel Auditorium is located).

The concert is free and open to the public, with a freewill offering taken to support the study and performance of steel drum music at Bethel.

Senior saxophone recital set for April 24

Caleb Abbott will give his senior recital Saturday at 7 p.m. in Krehbiel Auditorium in Luyken Fine Arts Center.

 

 

 

 

 

 

Abbott, Wichita, is a student of Joel Boettger, Bethel College instructor of saxophone.

Abbott is scheduled to graduate from Bethel May 16, 2021, with a degree in music performance.

In his recital, he will offer a selection of classical and jazz pieces by Alexander Glazunov, Victor Morosco, Wayne Shorter and Guy Wood & Robert Mellin, as well as an original composition.

The steel drum class presents its end-of-interterm concert Friday, Jan. 24, at 11 a.m. in Memorial Hall.

 

 

 

 

Brad Shores, director of athletic bands and instructor of steel drums at Bethel, teaches the class.

"The concert will showcase the skills learned in the steel drum interterm class," Shores said, "and will consist of 8-9 songs."

It is free and open to the public.
