NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – The Bethel College women’s basketball team is off to its hottest start in five years, which included a sweep of KCAC Player of the Week honors for Oct. 30-Nov. 5.
Abby Schmidt, freshman from Newton, and Jade Brown, junior from Sanford, Florida, earned Offensive and Defensive Player of the Week honors, respectively. They were selected by a vote of conference sports information directors.
Coming off the bench in every game thus far, Schmidt, a 6-2 center, is well on her way to becoming a household name at Bethel, and perhaps soon in the KCAC.
She averaged just under 18 points per game this week, to go along with seven rebounds per game. This includes her 25-point, 13-rebound breakout effort at the McPherson Classic Nov. 3, which helped power Bethel to the overtime victory over Haskell.
Schmidt and the team came back the next day for a huge 75-71 OT upset of (RV) Bellevue.
Schmidt did this while shooting an uber-efficient 70 percent from the floor.
Brown, a 5-5 guard, played a huge part as to why Bethel went 3-0 on the week and pulled off the upset of Bellevue.
She contributed by cleaning up the glass almost five times a game, dishing out assists at the same pace, and also turning in a game-high four steals against Bellevue.
Bethel College ranks at No. 1 in College Consensus’ ranking of Kansas colleges and universities, and is the only Kansas private college listed in the Forbes.com analysis of top colleges and universities, the Washington Monthly National Universities-Liberal Arts section and the National Liberal Arts College category of U.S. News & World Report, all for 2017-18. The four-year liberal arts college is affiliated with Mennonite Church USA. For more information, see www.bethelks.edu.
