NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – When the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference recently released its list of scholar-athletes for 2015–16, Bethel men’s basketball was at the top of their sport with eight.
The softball, women’s tennis and men’s golf teams all tied for first place, with nine, six and four, respectively, and the women’s basketball team tied for second, with 13.
To be named Scholar-Athletes, students must have sophomore standing at the start of the sport season, maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.333 on a 4.0 scale, and letter in their sport.

Softball Scholar-Athletes are Kaylen Fike, junior from Ada, Oklahoma, Emily Knight, sophomore from Moundridge, Madison McDowell, junior from Basehor, Elizabeth Ratzlaff, sophomore from Moundridge, Jeni Reichenberger, junior from Wichita, Trista Rich, senior from Junction City, Michelle Schrag, sophomore from Moundridge, Alyssa Sullivan, junior from Kansas City, Kansas, and Alexis Wilson, junior from Wamego.
The women’s tennis honorees are Julie Baker, junior from Park City, Stephanie Brown, junior from Newton, Kimberly Buzbee, junior from Topeka, Rachel Herzog, junior from Ellsworth, Breanna Rogers, junior from North Newton, and Rachel Shogren, 2016 graduate from Hesston.
Men’s golf Scholar-Athletes are Sam Bertholf, junior from Winfield, Brian Krehbiel, senior from Donnellson, Iowa, Kyle Regier, and Jaden Schmidt, senior from Moundridge.
On the women’s basketball team, KCAC Scholar-Athletes are Brittney Carter, senior from Sylvia, Mekale Chapple, 2016 graduate from Jones, Oklahoma, Elise Gerlach, senior from Derby, Cayla Lawless, junior from Burlingame, Madison McDowell, Ciara McKinney, junior from Moore, Oklahoma, Abigail Pineda, junior from Malone, Texas, Trista Rich, Kylee Schunn, junior from Whitewater, Kendra Scott, 2016 graduate from Newton, Rachael Terbush, senior from Castle Rock, Colorado, Jaime Tschetter, 2016 graduate from Freeman, South Dakota, and Lauren Ulrich, 2016 graduate from Walnut, California.
Bethel had KCAC Scholar-Athletes in nearly all sports, for a total of 49 (including several in two sports). Women’s basketball and golf were named KCAC Scholar Teams for 2015–16. To be eligible, the cumulative GPA for student-athletes whose names appear on a team’s participation list must be above 2.75 on a 4.00 scale
In men’s soccer, the honorees are Lucas DuPriest, senior from Fort Collins, Colorado, Eric Preheim, 2016 graduate from Brentwood, Tennessee, and Ryan Stuchlik, senior from Newton. In women’s soccer, they are Nichole Gabriel, 2016 graduate from Omaha, Nebraska, Shelby Johnson, 2016 graduate from Rose Hill, Kelsey Peterson, senior from Plano, Texas, and Rachael Terbush.
In men’s and women’s cross country, they are Grace Bradfield, senior from Derby, Olivia Gehring, 2016 graduate from Manhattan, Laird Goertzen, 2016 graduate from Goessel, and Erin Regier, 2016 graduate from Newton.
In volleyball, they are Ashley Dishon, 2016 graduate from Horton, and Tia Goertzen, senior from Goessel. In football, the scholar-athletes are Austin Biggerstaff, senior from Clyde, and Leland Brown III, 2016 graduate from Galveston, Texas.
Men’s tennis Scholar-Athletes are Jenson Kingsley and Tyler Shima, junior from Topeka.
Bethel also had five NAIA Scholar-Teams, including men’s and women’s basketball and golf. Women’s soccer and competitive cheer and dance were the other two teams.
To be considered for this award, a team must have a minimum 3.0 grade point average on a 4.0 scale, with the average including all eligible varsity student-athletes.
