NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – Bethel College sophomore Kimberly Buzbee has been selected to receive a $2,425 UPS Scholarship for 2015–16, provided through the Kansas Independent College Association (KICA) Fund.

Buzbee, of Topeka, is the daughter of Julie Buzbee and the late Robert Buzbee and a 2014 graduate of Topeka High School. She is a member of Bethel’s women’s tennis team and plans to enter the Bethel nursing program.

“This scholarship was honestly a huge surprise,” Buzbee said. “I never thought something like this would happen to me. I worked very hard in all my classes until this point and I’m very honored for the recognition. This scholarship will help me tremendously to pay my tuition.”

Buzbee was named to the spring 2015 Honor Roll at Bethel College, which recognizes students with a semester GPA of 3.5 to 3.69.

The KICA Fund awarded a UPS scholarship to one high-achieving, low-income student at each of the 18 private colleges and universities that are members of the Topeka-based organization.

The scholarships are made possible by a grant from the UPS Educational Endowment Fund, administered by the Council of Independent Colleges (CIC) in Washington, D.C.

This school year, CIC and the UPS Foundation teamed up to provide nearly $1.5 million in student scholarships, to be distributed through state-based private college associations like KICA around the country.

UPS Scholarships are awarded based on students’ academic achievement and financial need.

The UPS Educational Endowment Fund was established in the 1970s by the UPS Foundation to support programs that benefit underserved populations such as first-generation, low-income, minority or new American students.

Since its inception, the endowment has generated more than $50 million in scholarship support for more than 17,000 students at independent colleges and universities.
