NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – Geraldine Tyrell, Bethel College assistant professor of nursing, will become director of nursing beginning July 1.

She replaces Phyllis Miller, who announced her resignation earlier this semester.

Tyrell has a bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) from Bethel College and earned her master’s degree in nursing from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center, Tulsa. She also holds certification as a nurse educator from the National League for Nursing.

Tyrell has taught in Bethel’s nursing program since January 2008. Before taking the faculty position at Bethel, she worked as a staff nurse at Wesley Medical Center, Wichita, and Cottonwood Pediatrics, Newton.

In the Bethel program, Tyrell has taught a range of courses, both didactic and clinical. Since 2010, she has been coordinator for lab/simulation and has taught the Synthesis of Concepts course, critical to the success of graduating seniors preparing for the professional licensure exam.

Tyrell’s service to the college has included a full term on the Educational Policies Committee, which she chaired in 2013-14. She pioneered the nursing travel/service course to Haiti and the broader Cross-cultural Learning: Haiti course, both of which were recently approved by faculty vote.

“In her interview with the search committee,” said Brad Born, vice president for academic affairs, “Geri demonstrated her personal and professional investment in the Bethel nursing program, her desire to sustain its excellence and her readiness to step into this leadership role.”
