NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – Bethel College students Daniel Barrera, Newton, and Carl Lehmann, Marion, South Dakota, will join together for their senior saxophone recital May 10 at 2 p.m. in the Administration Building chapel.
Although neither is a music major, the two have been involved in music all four years at Bethel, and also chose to do a junior saxophone recital together last year.
Both Barrera and Lehman will graduate May 18, with degrees in business and biology, respectively. They have studied with James Pisano and this year are students of Joel Linscheid, director of jazz studies.
They will perform works by Alexander Glazunov, Eugene Bozza and Barry Cockcroft.
Piano accompanists are Rich Toevs, North Newton, and Karen Bauman Schlabaugh, Bethel professor of music. Barrera and Lehmann will be joined by guest saxophonists Joel Boettger, senior from Hesston, and Westen Gesell, freshman from Winnipeg, Manitoba.
Both Barrera and Lehmann are members of Bethel College Jazz Ensemble I and the Bethel College Wind Ensemble. In this school year, both sang with the Bethel College Concert Choir and were part of the Policeman’s Chorus in Bethel’s March 2014 production of The Pirates of Penzance. Lehmann also sings with the men’s a cappella group Open Road.
Lehmann is a 2010 graduate of Freeman (S.D.) Academy. Barrera is a 2010 graduate of Newton High School.
Their recital is free and open to the public. A reception will follow in The Meeting Place, on the ground floor of the Ad Building.
