Jazz group to play at Mojo’s

NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – The Mid-Kansas Jazz Ensemble, an auditioned high school honors group based at Bethel College, will perform at Mojo’s coffee shop on campus May 2.

The music starts at 7 p.m. James Pisano, associate professor of music at Bethel, directs the group.

The set list includes “Great Northern Express” by Fred Sturm, “Ask Me Now” and “Blue Monk” by Thelonious Monk, and “Little Gus” by Paul McKee.

Mid-Kansas Jazz Ensemble personnel are: saxophones, Neil Smucker (Newton High School), Joseph Jumonville (McPherson High School), Zane Richter (McPherson), Jacob Penner (Hesston High School) and Gus Williams (Hesston); trombones, Andrew Langston (Wichita East High School) and Brendan Whalen (Wichita East); trumpets, Michael Raephour (Andover High School), Caleb Zook (Newton), Alex Fugate (Wichita East) and Connor Born (Newton); drums, Alex Trumble (Newton) and Jon Geidel (Hesston); piano, Mark Kreider (Newton); bass, Hunter Shirley (Wichita East); and guitar, Tyler Cordell (McPherson).

Bethel College is the only private college in Kansas listed in the 2012-13 analysis of premier colleges and universities in the United States and ranks in the top five “Best Baccalaureate Colleges” in the Washington Monthly annual college guide for 2012-13.
