NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – Bethel College celebrated a signing recently – for a student with exemplary academic credentials.
Starting with the 2012-13 school year, Bethel will award scholarships in five specific academic areas: athletic training, chemistry, health sciences, history and psychology.
April Childs of Lyons, a 2012 graduate of Hutchinson Community College, is the first academic signee. On May 9, Childs sat down with Dwight Krehbiel, Bethel professor of psychology, and Chuck Buller, HCC professor of chemistry and himself a Bethel graduate, to sign her letter of intent to study in the health sciences at Bethel.
“Now that we have these departmental scholarships, we want to honor achievement and success in the classroom the same way we honor those things in athletics,” said Clark Oswald, Bethel associate director of admissions.
Childs plans to major in natural sciences at Bethel and to enter a doctoral program in physical therapy upon completion of her undergraduate degree.
“April is an exceptional student and academically worthy of this award,” Oswald said. Childs is a 2010 graduate of Lyons High School.
