NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – Jazz, a popular fixture of student musical offerings, will come to the Bethel College stage Nov. 3.
Bethel College Jazz Ensemble I and the Newton Mid-Kansas Jazz Ensemble will give a joint concert Thursday, Nov. 3, at 7 p.m. in Krehbiel Auditorium of the Fine Arts Center. Both groups perform under the direction of James Pisano, associate professor of music and director of jazz studies at Bethel.
In addition, both groups will be joined by trumpeter Bob McCurdy, Bethel instructor of trumpet, as a guest soloist.
Admission to the concert is free and open to the public with a freewill offering taken to support jazz studies and performance at Bethel College.
Jazz Ensemble I will open the concert. Numbers include the classic “On Green Dolphin Street,” “Pretty Road” by Maria Schneider and “Bodysnatchers” by Radiohead.
The Mid-Kansas Jazz Ensemble will follow with jazz standards “Shiny Stockings” and “Just One of Those Things,” along with “Cerulean Sky” by Fred Sturm.
“I want to express special thanks to Sue Penner of North Newton, Valerie Klaassen of Whitewater, Leann Toews of Goessel and the Bethel office of admissions for providing refreshments for our rehearsals and concerts,” Pisano added.
Upcoming jazz at Bethel includes the annual Christmas Gala Jazz Concert, Friday, Dec. 3, at 8 p.m. in Krehbiel Auditorium, featuring Bethel College Jazz Ensembles I and II and open to the public.
Members of Jazz Ensemble I are: alto saxophones, Daniel Barrera, Newton, and Paul Voran, Newton; tenor saxophones, Joel Boettger, Hesston, and Jordan Ortman, Marion, S.D.; baritone saxophone, Carl Lehmann, Marion, S.D.; trumpets, Kyle Doesken, Derby, Evan Koch, Colorado Springs, Colo., Taylor Stucky, Moundridge, and Andrew Zehr, Newton; trombones, Rebecca Trumble, Newton, and Quinn Bowers, McPherson; bass trombone, Eric Goering, McPherson; drums, Nathaniel Yoder, North Newton; bass, Landon Bartel, Newton; guitar, Megan Siebert, Topeka, and Bradley McKellip, Newton; and piano, Ian Gingrich-Gaylord, Newton.
The Mid-Kansas Jazz Ensemble is an auditioned high school honors jazz band, made up of students from local high schools. Auditions for the group were held earlier this month.
