NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – A Bethel College football player has been selected to play in a national all-star game.

Victory Sports Network, the internet sports news provider for the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics, announced its picks March 22 for the NAIA Senior Classic, to be played Saturday, April 30, at Salina Central Stadium.

Caleb Stephens, Lawrence, a 5-10, 245-pound defensive lineman for the Bethel College Threshers, will play for the Nationals side in the game. He was one of 23 players from the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference chosen for the classic.

This is the fifth year for VSN to assemble some of the best senior players in the NAIA for the game.

“Each year, I am more and more amazed by some of the players we get to participate in this game,” said Jason Donnelly, founder and owner of VSN and the NAIA Senior Classic.

Stephens, who is majoring in social work at Bethel, is a graduate of Free State High School in Lawrence. As a member of the Thresher men’s track and field team, he has consistently placed well in discus and shot put events. He also sings with the Bethel College Concert Choir and the men’s a cappella group Open Road, and serves as one of Bethel's student chaplains. He is the son of Doug and LaDonna Stephens of Lawrence.

“It is an exciting thing for Caleb and the Bethel family,” said Travis Graber, head football coach. “It has been a pleasure coaching Caleb the last four years and seeing him grow not only as a player but as an individual.”

Bethel College is the only private, liberal arts college in Kansas listed in the 2010-11 analysis of top colleges and universities in the United States, and is in the first tier in its category in the U.S. News & World Report annual ranking of “America’s Top Colleges” for 2011. The four-year liberal arts college is affiliated with Mennonite Church USA. For more information, see
