NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – Katherine (Katie) Malotte, a Bethel College senior, has been selected to receive a UPS Scholarship for 2010-11, provided through the Kansas Independent College Association (KICA) Fund.

Malotte, from Marysville, is a graduate of Marysville High School and is the daughter of Hannah and Marty Malotte of Marysville.

At Bethel, Malotte is majoring in literary studies and history. She is a member of the Thresher women’s tennis team and was named KCAC Most Valuable Player for 2009-10, along with 1st Team All-Conference and KCAC Academic All-Conference. She is studying this semester in Ireland.

KICA, based in Topeka, is a statewide association for private colleges and universities and is affiliated with the Foundation for Independent Higher Education (FIHE). At the national level, FIHE coordinates with the UPS Foundation to secure funding for UPS Scholarships distributed through state associations.

This year, FIHE awarded more than $1.5 million in scholarships from its UPS Educational Endowment Fund to private institutions of higher learning across the nation, including a grant of $48,600 to the KICA. These scholarships are awarded on the basis of student academic achievement and financial need.

“A college degree opens the door to countless opportunities,” said Ken Sternad, president of the UPS Foundation. “UPS takes great pride in our long-standing partnership with FIHE and in our support of thousands of students over the years who have been able to pursue an education from our nation’s private colleges.”

Bethel College is the only private, liberal arts college in Kansas listed in the 2010-11 Forbes.com analysis of top colleges and universities in the United States and is in the first tier in its category in the U.S. News & World Report annual ranking of “America’s Top Colleges” for 2011. The four-year liberal arts college is affiliated with Mennonite Church USA. For more information, see www.bethelks.edu.
