NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – Two more members of the Bethel College forensics team have qualified for the national tournament in two different events each.
Several members of the squad competed in the Hutchinson Community College-Barton Community College Rodeo Swing Tournaments held on the BCC campus in Great Bend, Nov. 6-7.
Bethel was one of 14 schools competing in the HCC Tournament on Saturday. At that event, Julia Huxman, junior from Wichita, took first place in Informative Speaking, which qualified her for the American Forensic Association-National Individual Events Tournament (AFA-NIET) to be held next April at the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
Huxman also placed first in Persuasive Speaking, which gave her second place in the individual sweepstakes at the HCC Tournament.
Alex Stucky, senior from Moundridge, took first in Extemporaneous Speaking and fifth in After Dinner Speaking. Matt Frey, freshman from Moundridge, finished second, and C.J. Fischer, freshman from Newton, third in Extemporaneous Speaking.
Marike Stucky, freshman from Moundridge, finished third in Programmed Oral Interpretation and Natalie Stucky, sophomore from Moundridge, was fifth in Persuasive Speaking. Keari Bennett, freshman from Sharon, also competed in the HCC Tournament.
The next day, in the Barton Community College Tournament, with Bethel one of 12 schools competing, Alex Stucky took first in both Impromptu Speaking and Extemporaneous Speaking, which qualifies him for the AFA-NIET national tournament in both events. He was also second in After Dinner Speaking.
Marike Stucky finished first in Dramatic Interpretation and third in Programmed Oral Interpretation. Natalie Stucky was first in Informative Speaking and second in Persuasive Speaking.
Huxman claimed a first-place finish in Persuasive Speaking, which qualifies her for nationals in that event. She was also fifth in Communication Analysis, and took third place in the individual sweepstakes.
Brandon Schwager, junior from Lawrence, also competed in the BCC Tournament. Bethel took second- and third-place trophies in the BCC Individual Events Team Sweepstakes and the Barton/Hutch Rodeo Swing Individual Events Team Sweepstakes, respectively.
