NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – For the third straight year, Bethel College is the only private, liberal arts college in Kansas and one of only three institutions of higher education in the state to be ranked in a analysis of top colleges and universities in the United States.

Along with Bethel, the University of Kansas and Kansas State University made Forbes’ annual ranking of the nation’s 610 best colleges, released Aug. 11.

The annual ranking, compiled by Forbes and the Center for College Affordability and Productivity (CCAP) rates 610 undergraduate programs out of 6,600 accredited U.S. colleges “based on the quality of the education they provide, the experience of the students and how much they achieve.”

Bethel ranked No. 532, with KU at No. 397 on the list and K-State at No. 530.

The report says 25 percent of the ranking is based on student evaluations of courses and instructors, as recorded on the website Another 25 percent comes from “post-graduate success,” based on listings in Who’s Who in America, along with average graduate salaries as reported by Other factors included graduation rates, competitive awards students have received and student debt rates after four years.

The Forbes report says that only 9 percent of the nation’s 6,600 accredited postsecondary institutions make the list, “so appearing on our list at all is an indication that a school meets a high standard.”

Bethel is also one of only two Mennonite Church USA-affiliated colleges to be ranked by, along with Goshen (Ind.) College.

“We are thrilled that Bethel College has again been recognized for the outstanding work of our faculty and staff,” said Bethel President Perry White. “The varied criteria used to determine these rankings further confirm Bethel’s commitment to nurturing the whole student.”
