NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – Matthew Root, Topeka, a senior at Bethel College, has been selected to receive a UPS Scholarship.
Root is the son of Ann and Darren Root of Topeka and is a 2005 graduate of Shawnee Heights High School. He is majoring in history at Bethel, where he is a member of the history club, CLIO, a writer for the college newspaper, The Bethel Collegian, and a participant in Bethel’s undergraduate research program.
“It feels great to be awarded the scholarship,” Root said. “The scholarship will be very beneficial by elevating part of the financial burden of school.”
Root is one of 639 UPS Scholars at private colleges and universities across the nation. These scholarships are funded annually by the UPS Educational Endowment Fund, established by the United Parcel Service (UPS) at the Foundation for Independent Higher Education (FIHE) in Washington, D.C. FIHE administers the program in cooperation with the Kansas Independent College Fund.
This year, the UPS Educational Endowment Fund distributed nearly $1.8 million for its scholarship program, bringing the cumulative total amount of scholarships awarded to over $41 million. An additional $430,000 in competitive grants will be distributed to private colleges and universities this year to improve educational services for students and encourage collaboration among colleges.
In announcing this year’s scholarships, Lisa Hamilton, UPS Foundation president, said, “For nearly 50 years, the UPS Foundation has been honored to support education through partnerships with such organizations as FIHE and the Kansas Independent College Fund. The availability of quality, affordable higher education at places like Bethel College is critical to establishing a talented, more diverse workforce.”
