Thresher 5K Run, Jog or Walk aimed at all ages

NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – The Thresher 5K Run, Jog or Walk will help kick off the major day of Bethel College’s annual Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct.6.

The all-terrain circuit includes Sand Creek Trail (dirt and wood-chip surface) in the northeast corner of the campus as well as Schmidt Track within the Thresher Sports Complex and a brief section of the paved Sand Creek bike and walking trail. The event has proven popular with runners, joggers and walkers from pre-school age through senior citizens.

The Thresher 5K begins at the Thresher Sports Complex on the north end of the Bethel campus. Race day registration will take place from 7-7:30 a.m. under Thresher Stadium. There will be a pre-race gathering at 7:45 a.m. The race will start promptly at 8 a.m. on Schmidt Track, where it will also end.

The top three male and female overall finishers will receive cash prizes and the top three male and female finishers in each of the 12 age categories will receive a medal.

There are also forms available for download on the Bethel College Web site.

Pre-registration forms with payment must be postmarked or hand-delivered by Thursday, Sept. 27. Those pre-registering by that date can pick up their packets, including T-shirt, in the Alumni Office on the third floor of the Administration Building on Thursday or Friday, Oct. 4 or 5, or at the registration table on race day.

The pre-registration fee, which includes the T-shirt, is $17 for adults and $10 for children (add $2 for a long-sleeved shirt). Late registration (any time after Sept. 27, including race day), with the T-shirt available later, is $20 for any age.

The Thresher 5K Run, Jog or Walk is part of Bethel College’s 37th annual Fall Festival, scheduled for Oct. 4-7. Other festival activities include ethnic foods, entertainment, arts and crafts and children’s programs, as well as alumni and athletic events. New features this year include an all-day science symposium and a high school football game at Bethel’s Joe W. Goering Field (La Cross High School vs. Sedan High School), both on Friday, and an early morning bird walk on Saturday led by local veteran birder Gregg Friesen.
