NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – Kite lovers should take note: This year’s Earth Day activities at Kauffman Museum on the Bethel College campus were planned with you in mind.

On Sunday afternoon, April 22, the museum will sponsor an Earth Day Adventure Walk. Participants can come to the Sand Creek Trailhead starting at 2 p.m. to pick up scavenger hunt directions that will take them along approximately one mile of the Sand Creek Trail through wooded and riparian environments. The event ends at 4 p.m.

Adventure Walkers will pass a kite flying station as they make their way back to the trailhead across the Bethel College sports practice fields. There will be kites to fly – or you can bring your own – and help available.

Andi Schmidt Andres, Kauffman Museum curator of education, advises everyone to “dress for the weather and bring a water bottle.”

The Earth Day Adventure Walk is free for all ages. In addition to Kauffman Museum, sponsors are the Sand Creek Trail Committee and the Bethel College Environmental Action Club.

To get to the Sand Creek Trailhead (Memorial Grove), take Exit #34 (North Newton/Abilene/K-15) off Interstate 135 or follow Main Street (K-15) north out of Newton through North Newton. Turn east on 29th Street and drive between the sports stadium and parking lot, past Goering Hall. Follow the gravel road to the right and park on the east side of the tennis courts, then walk the paved bike path 100 yards to Memorial Grove. For more information, call Kauffman Museum at 316-283-1612.

Regular Kauffman Museum hours are 9:30 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Tuesday-Friday, and 1:30-4:30 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. The museum is closed on Mondays and major holidays. Admission to the museum, which also includes admission to the permanent exhibits “Of Land and People,” “Mirror of the Martyrs” and “Mennonite Immigrant Furniture,” is $3 for adults and $1.50 for children ages 6-16. More information is available by calling the museum or visiting its Web site, kauffman.bethelks.edu/.
