NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – The new year is traditionally a time for resolutions.
If any of yours were to eat healthier, to learn how to buy and sell on eBay, to take up container gardening or to gain a new artistic skill, the Bethel College Women’s Association may be able to help you meet your goal.
The BCWA is sponsoring a Welcome to Education at Bethel day on Saturday, Jan. 20, in the Fine Arts Center on the Bethel College campus in North Newton. WEB Day begins at 8 a.m. and ends at 12:30 p.m. During that time, you may choose two of four different workshops being offered.
Susan Jackson will present “Finding your way to a healthier you” – how to include more whole grains, fruits and vegetables, lean meats and calcium-rich foods in your diet while also limiting fats, sodium and sugar. Jackson has been a Family and Consumer Services Extension agent in Harvey County for 17 years and is well known as a frequent contributor to The Newton Kansan.
Kristine Tossie, workshop coordinator at the Hutchinson Public Library, will give an overview of eBay, its history, the selling process and how to register, bid and buy. Her presentation will also deal with issues such as PayPal, shipping calculators, sniping and ways to protect yourself from hazards of e-commerce.
Andy Rizza, owner of Stone Creek Nursery in Hesston, will demonstrate “the who, what, when and why of container gardening.”
Julie Miller, owner of The Newton Beadery on Main Street in Newton, will lead the fourth choice workshop, in which participants will learn to bead a bracelet. Miller is a recent Bethel graduate in art and is a freelance graphic designer, in addition to running The Beadery, which also sells yarn and offers classes in knitting and beading.
The cost for WEB Day is $20 per person (or $27 if you choose the beading class, to cover supplies), which includes a brunch. Registration deadline is January 8. Brochures with registration forms are available at the Thresher Bookstore in Schultz Student Center on the Bethel College campus, open weekdays from 8 a.m.-5 p.m. (note that the store will be closed for the holidays on Friday, Dec. 29, and Monday, Jan. 1) or by calling Susan Bartel at (316) 283-5632.
All WEB Day activities, beginning with registration at 8 a.m., with the opening at 8:30, will take place in the Fine Arts Center, which is handicapped accessible.
