HESSTON, KAN. -- Imani Winds, a woodwind quintet, will present the final concert in the 2005-06 Hesston-Bethel Performing Arts season at 7:30 p.m., Saturday, April 8, in Hesston College’s Yost Center. The five accomplished musicians of Imani Winds joined forces in 1997 to expand the boundaries of the traditional wind quintet and explore the links between European, African, and American music traditions. The name Imani, which means "faith" in Swahili, embodies this mission. This young ensemble of African/Latin American heritage works to perfect their combination of dynamic playing, innovative programming and inspirational outreach programs.

Imani Winds actively seeks to bring new music into the wind quintet literature, including compositions and arrangements by Imani members Valerie Coleman and Jeff Scott. The ensemble has adopted new textures and sounds by employing folk influences and percussive elements, and through collaborations.

The group has released three albums, starting with Umoja, a self-produced and self-funded CD in 2002. Their second recording, The Classical Underground, was nominated for a 2006 Grammy Award in the Best Classical Crossover Album category. Imani Winds’ latest effort is a self-titled CD on the KOCH International Classics label.

Their Hesston program includes Mongo Santamaria’s "Afro Blue," "Four Spanish Pieces" by Manuel De Falla, a Valerie Coleman arrangement of "Steal Away," and John Harbison’s "Quintet for Winds."

The Imani Winds Hesston-Bethel Performing Arts Concert is supported by Mid-America Arts Alliance, with generous underwriting by the National Endowment for the Arts, Kansas Arts Commission, and foundations, corporations and individuals throughout Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Nebraska, Oklahoma and Texas.

Tickets are $15, $13 and $12, with discounts for students and senior citizens. Call 866-437-7866 extension 8158 (Hesston College) or 316-284-5205 (Bethel College) for reservations.
