NORTH NEWTON, KAN. -- A member of the presidential Marine band will join two Bethel College music faculty for special recitals at Bethel and at Newman University. Richard Tirk, Bethel College assistant professor of music, and Christopher Smith of Washington, D.C., will play trumpet, with Karen Bauman Schlabaugh, Bethel College professor of music, on piano in recitals at Newman University’s DeMattias Fine Arts Center Performance Hall on Sunday, April 2, at 7 p.m., and in the Administration Building chapel on the Bethel College campus on Monday, April 3, at 7:30 p.m. Both performances are free.

Tirk and Smith first met at Western Michigan University, where both were working on music degrees. After completing his bachelor of music degree at WMU, Smith went on to attend the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y., and currently is a member of the "President’s Own" Marine Band in Washington.

The program will include music of DeFalla, Francaix, Antheil, Tull, Enesco and Pilss.

While in Kansas, Smith will also conduct master classes at Wichita State on Tuesday, April 4, at 11:30 a.m. in Miller Auditorium, and at Bethel College.
