NORTH NEWTON, KAN. -- A Bethel College spring tradition, Jazz on the Plaza, is now Jazz on the Green. Instructor of music Stephen Jones, who directs Bethel’s jazz groups, says the move from Centennial Plaza (in front of Memorial Hall) to the campus Green is being made to give the event "more of an ‘outdoor jazz festival’ atmosphere."
He continued, "People can feel free--and in fact are encouraged--to bring lawn chairs, beach towels, blankets or whatever to sit on. There will be no chairs provided. If people want to bring their own snacks, non-alcoholic beverages or even a candlelight dinner, that’s perfect. It should be more fun and festive in the grass than on the plaza."
Jazz on the Green will take place Wednesday, May 11, beginning at 8 p.m., and is free and open to the public. Groups performing will be (in order) Jazz Ensemble II, Jazz Combo and Jazz Ensemble I, with repertoires including classic to contemporary jazz.
If the weather is good but the ground is soggy, the performance will move back to Centennial Plaza. In case of bad weather, it will be held in Krehbiel Auditorium in the Fine Arts Center.
