NORTH NEWTON, KAN. -- The addition of dance instruction to the original offering of private music lessons has brought about a name change for the Bethel College Academy of Music. On Monday, Aug. 23, the Bethel College Academy of Performing Arts will open its doors for classes at 123 East Broadway. Instruction in dance performance and the Suzuki method for stringed instruments will be offered at the new site. Traditional music lessons in piano, strings, voice, woodwind, brass, percussion and guitar will continue to be offered at the Fine Arts Center on the Bethel College campus. Under the direction of Margaret Mead-Finizio, the dance department will focus on providing a foundation in creative movement for children ages 4-6 and a comprehensive program in ballet, modern dance, jazz, tap and Irish. Mead-Finizio has taught at Flint (Mich.) School of Performing Arts; Quad Cities Ballet in Rock Island, Ill., Fairfield (Iowa) Ballet; Nolte Academy in Coralville, Iowa, and the University of Iowa in Iowa City.

Rebecca Schloneger begins her fourth year as director of the Suzuki strings program. Under her leadership the strings program outgrew its studio space at the Fine Arts Center. Other instructors include Lurena Dunn, who is in her third year of teaching at the Academy, and newcomers Mary Kelly, violin and viola instructor, and Bethel College student and Apprentice Instructor Parker Stanley, who will teach cello.

A retail music store will also be located at the Broadway address, where Great Sounds of McPherson, Kan., will open its second store. Great Sounds II will sell Suzuki music, supplies and piano music in addition to offering new and used piano sales and service.

The Bethel College Academy of Performing Arts at 123 East Broadway will be open Monday through Friday, 10 a.m.-9 p.m., and Saturdays, 9 a.m.- 6 p.m.
