Bethel College to honor alumni, graduating seniors

NORTH NEWTON, KAN. -- Bethel College will honor 95 graduating seniors and also returning alumni during end-of-year celebrations May 21-23 on campus. The college will celebrate the commencement of its 111th graduating class at 2:30 p.m., Sunday, May 23 in Memorial Hall. Commencement speaker is Bethel College alumnus Daniel Hege, who is music director of the Syracuse (N.Y.) Symphony Orchestra. Saturday events that are open to the public include the nursing pinning ceremony at 2 p.m. in Krehbiel Auditorium, Fine Arts Center, and the senior art exhibit reception from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Fine Arts Center Gallery. Sunday activities for graduating seniors and their guests include the Baccalaureate Service at 10 a.m. in Bethel College Mennonite Church.

Bethel College Alumni Association will honor two outstanding alumni during the weekend. Alfred Habegger, Enterprise, Ore., will receive the Distinguished Achievement Award. Leo Driedger, Winnipeg, Man., Canada, will receive the Outstanding Alumnus Award.

The classes of '29, '34, '39, '44, '49, '54, '59, '64, '69 will hold reunions May 21 and 22. Alumni class members will assemble Friday evening for an opening dinner, followed by a campus tour and an ice cream social. On Saturday the reunion classes will join retired faculty and staff at a breakfast buffet. Bethel College President E. LaVerne Epp and Marilyn Epp will host reunion classes observing 50 or more years at a coffee in Goerz House. Classes will meet at noon for reunion luncheons in various locations on campus and in North Newton.

The alumni banquet for graduating seniors and all alumni and friends of the college is scheduled for Saturday evening, May 22 in Memorial Hall. To make reservations for the alumni banquet, contact Thresher Bookstore at (316) 284-5281 by May 12.
