NORTH NEWTON, KAN. -- Open Road will perform at 7:30 p.m., Sunday, May 16 in the Administration Building at Bethel College, North Newton. The men's octet, all Bethel College students, will present an a cappella program of Christian and secular pieces. The ensemble performs music from groups such as King's Singers, Full Table and Chanticleer as well as pieces from the all male student group Stairwell, popular at Bethel during the late 1990s. Admission is free and open to the public. Seniors Jeffrey Graber from Newton and Chris Herman from Kingman have sung with Open Road since its inception in 2001. Fellow senior Chad Unrau joined in 2002. Other members this year are freshman Jeff Janzen from Fresno, Calif., sophomore Scott Janzen from Henderson, Neb., freshman Ben Kliewer from Buhler, sophomore Joel Krehbiel from Moundridge and freshman Aaron Linscheid from North Newton.

Some of the selections on the concert include "MLK" by U2 and arranged by the King's Singers, "Blackbird" by the King's Singers, "This I Pray" and "View that Holy City" by Stairwell, as well as other spirituals and Mennonite favorites.

The group is currently making a CD, which they plan to release at the May 16 concert. The CD will also be available at Thresher Bookstore at Bethel College, (316) 284-5281.

"Singing with this group has been a dream come true for me," says Chris Herman. "Growing up, I listened to Stairwell and A Cappella and dreamed of one day being able to sing in a group like that. This concert is the culmination of three years of hard work and the realization of that dream."
