NORTH NEWTON, KAN. -- When the lights go down, the music starts up at Bethel College's Jazz on the Plaza. The public is invited to experience the interplay of the crepuscular light and the jazz tunes when the Bethel College Jazz Ensembles perform at 9 p.m., Wednesday, May 12 at Centennial Plaza on the college campus in North Newton. "We're capturing the outdoor jazz festival atmosphere right here on the Bethel campus," director Stephen Jones said.

Under the direction of Jones, the Jazz Ensembles I and II and Combos I and II will present a mixture of classic and modern jazz tunes.

On April 23 at the Wichita Jazz Festival, Jazz Ensemble I and Combo I each received Superior ratings. Individual awards for Outstanding Musicianship went to senior Tory A. Doerksen, Prescott Valley, Ariz., on bass; senior Chris Janzen, Fresno, Calif., on guitar; and freshman Jerol Fast, Boulder, Colo., on trombone.

"The jazz program at Bethel continues to grow as a result of the hard work and dedication of the students here," said Jones. "I am proud of their achievements and proud to showcase them at this concert."

Seniors performing, in addition to Doerksen and Janzen, are Matt Esau, Hillsboro, on bass; Todd Flory, McPherson, on trumpet; Ryan O'Reilly, Mountain Lake, Minn., on trombone; Curtis N. Shoup, Winesburg, Ohio, on trumpet; Lora Swartzendruber, Plano, Texas, on tenor saxophone; and Benjamin Voth, Newton, on trumpet.

Admission is free. The public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs or blankets to the open-air concert, as other seating will be limited. In case of inclement weather, the concert will be held in Krehbiel Auditorium in the Fine Arts Center on the Bethel College campus.
