NORTH NEWTON, KAN. -- To celebrate National Dance Week, Bethel College Dance Ensemble will host the Dinner and Dance Theatre April 23 and 24 at Bethel College. A Dance Theatre performance is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., in Krehbiel Auditorium, Fine Arts Center at Bethel College in North Newton. Tiffany Jefferson is the producer. Performers will include the Bethel College Dance Ensemble, Newton Dance Center, MGM Studio of the Dance from Wichita, Wichita State University Hip Hop Class, B-Boys from Wichita, and the Paraguayan Dance Troupe from Paraguay.

Admission is $5; children five and under will be admitted free of charge. For reservations to a dinner in Schultz Student Center preceding the performance, call Thresher Bookstore by Wednesday, April 21. Tickets for the dinner and show are $12.

"We’ve expanded the celebration of National Dance Week this year with the addition of dance master classes on Saturday morning," says Jefferson who teaches dance at Bethel College and Newton Dance Center. "This will be a great opportunity for those who are interested in learning more about specific dances."

Master classes will be offered on Saturday, April 24, beginning at 10 a.m. in the Dance Studio in the Fine Arts Center at Bethel College. Instructors for the master classes and types of dances include Tiffany Jefferson, jazz; Sherry Urton, ballet; Nate Ohmie, tap; Pat Chipaeux, break dancing; and Leon Scott, modeling.

"With this celebration of National Dance Week comes the opportunity for the public to learn about dance and the various opportunities for dance in south central Kansas," says Jefferson. "The dance program at the college was new in fall of 2002, and I hope this event will help to expand the program."

Bethel College Dance Ensemble seniors Sara O. Flaming from Newton; Jana M. Petersheim from Morgantown, Pa.; and Maria Tschetter from Freeman, S.D., will perform senior dance pieces at the evening concerts.

Other Bethel dancers are sophomore Kurtz R. Holbert, Jr., from Fort Worth, Texas; junior Leah Larson from Clay Center; freshman Heather Linscheid from Fresno, Calif.; sophomore Paula Regier from Beatrice, Neb.; sophomore Janelle Renae Steiner from Albany, Ore.; junior Spencer Sward from Wichita; and junior Anna Weaverdyck from Ann Arbor, Mich.

"It’s exciting to be in on the planning for this event here because the arts truly are alive," Jefferson says.
