NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – Bethel College in North Newton will present the musical "Quilters" four times during the college’s annual Fall Festival, Oct. 2-5. Director is Brent Noel, assistant professor of communication arts. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Oct. 2 and 3, 3:30 p.m. Oct. 4, and 2 p.m. Oct. 5 in Krehbiel Auditorium, Fine Arts Center on the Bethel College campus. Tickets are $10 for adults, $9 for students and senior citizens and $6.50 for children ages 3-12. All seats are reserved. Sell-outs are expected for all shows. For tickets, call (316) 284-5281.

Performed by seven actresses, "Quilters" pieces together, through song and dance, a tribute to the courage and spirit of pioneer women. The plot centers around the life of Sarah McKendree Bonham and the legacy quilt she is sewing for her daughters. As the women sing and dance, they stitch together symbolic narratives of joy and heartbreak, desolation and survival in the rugged life of the pioneer woman.

"The situations and emotions in ‘Quilters’ are as varied and extreme as the weather in South Central Kansas, and they change just as quickly," Noel says. "The one constant for these women is quilting."

The cast includes Kathryn Kasper, professor of music, as Sarah McKendree Bonham. Cast as her daughters are Bethany Amstutz, junior from Goessel; Megan Bartel, senior from North Newton; Ivonne Cabrera, sophomore from McPherson; Miranda Crile, senior from Mt. Pleasant, Iowa; Danessa Fox, freshman from Towanda; and Greta Steingard, junior from Henderson, Neb.

Assisting Noel are student directors Mike Ducett, senior from Normal, Ill., and Rachel Hetzke, sophomore from Pawnee Rock. Chris Shaw, senior from Peabody, is the rehearsal pianist. Tiffany Jefferson is choreographer. Kathryn Kasper will also serve as musical director.

Bethel College hosts its 33rd annual Fall Festival Oct. 2-5. Other weekend activities on campus include food and entertainment for all ages, arts and crafts, alumni gatherings and athletic events.
