Bethel College senior mathematics major Amy Kaufman, Marion, S.D., presented a student talk at the annual meeting of the Kansas Section of the Mathematical Association of America (MAA), on April 5 at Fort Hays State University in Hays. Her talk, "The Piano Mover's Problem: Variations on a Theme", won first place among undergraduate students. The committee that judged the papers prefaced their announcement of the results by saying that this year's papers were outstanding as compared to other years, according to Bethel mathematics professor Richard Rempel. Kaufman won a free MAA book, a check for $50 from the Kansas Section, and a one-year membership in the MAA. She will be giving an extended version of the talk at 4 p.m., Thursday, April 10 at her Mathematical Sciences Seminar presentation in the Science Hall, room 203 on the Bethel College campus in North Newton. Admission is free and open to the public. Kaufman is a 1999 graduate of Freeman Academy.
