NORTH NEWTON, KAN. - The Bethel College nursing department will honor 14 students in a Lamplighting Ceremony at 2 p.m., Sunday, Feb. 16 in the Administration Building Chapel on the North Newton campus. The ceremony honors upperclass nursing students for their commitment to the profession. Bethel College students who will be honored include Heather Aaron from Wichita; Jamie (Jantz) Blowers from Bainbridge, Ohio, (and Goessel); Grayce Ann Brown from Murdock; Chanel Bryant from Wichita; Crystal Enz from Newton; Hillary Epp from Beatrice, Neb.; Polly Susan Graber from Freeman, S.D.; Tonya Jacobs from Goessel; Jennifer Deann Kellogg from Valley Center; Unita B. Kham from Kathmandu, Nepal; Cinday McIntosh from Wichita; Karen Sindelar from Howells, Neb.; Mary Dalayne Snavely from Wichita; and Kimberly Sodowsky from Hutchinson.
Speaker for the lamplighting ceremony will be registered nurse Val Gleason, who is vice-president of patient services at Via Christi Riverside Medical Center in Wichita. She will speak on "Remember the Call."
Lamps used in the traditional ceremony symbolize the work of the English nurse Florence Nightingale, founder of modern nursing, who lived from 1820-1910 and served soldiers in the Crimea.
"Florence Nightingale cared about the whole person," Penner says. "As our Bethel students become health care providers, may their gifts of service emulate the care and compassion of Florence Nightingale.
