NORTH NEWTON - Bethel College’s new Krehbiel Science Center (KSC) is in the news again. The quality of its construction has earned Martin K. Eby Construction, Co., Inc., the Award of Excellence from the Associated General Contractors of Kansas, Inc. Presentation of the award was made Jan. 31 at the chapter’s state meeting in Kansas City.

Completed last summer and dedicated in October, the 37,000 square-foot facility is red brick with limestone, light stucco and a colonnade. Collegiate gothic architecture ties the building to other design elements on the Bethel College campus in North Newton.

"Students and faculty at Bethel College and everyone who has experienced Krehbiel Science Center know of its quality," Bethel College President E. LaVerne Epp says. "It was built with extra care given to each detail of construction. Joe Levens, Chris Goevert, Steve Brazil and everyone else at Eby Construction deserve to be commended for this exceptional facility that will serve Bethel College as a center of learning and leadership for many years."

The four-level science center houses the departments of biology, chemistry, physics and psychology. KSC features state-of-the-art classrooms, research areas, seminar rooms, laboratories, and instrument and preparation rooms as well as offices. An observatory, a greenhouse and a distance learning center are other features.

Gregory Friesen with the architectural firm of CSNA Architects of Colorado Springs, Colo., designed KSC. PBA Architects of Wichita served as the local architects.
