NORTH NEWTON, KAN- Bethel College students will spend January in Israel and Palestine during a three-week course, titled Jerusalem Seminar, led by associate professor of Bible and religion Patty Shelly. In Jerusalem the group will survey the religions and cultures of the area and will explore some of the dynamics in the Israel/Palestinian conflict. Students will gain an understanding of various political and religious perspectives through visits and conversations with individuals and groups. Shelly served a four-year term as director of the West Bank program in Israel under Mennonite Central Committee from 1996-2000. She has led Bethel College student groups before and after her term with MCC. Participants in the tour include Jesse Zerger Nathan, sophomore from Moundridge; Joel Goering, junior from Silver Spring, Md.; and Phil Gratz, 2002 Bethel College graduate from Bluffton, Ohio.

This trip is a part of the college's for-credit January Interterm, in which students study one subject for a month. This year other students will travel also to Colorado, Chicago, New York City and Guatemala. Many students also study on campus.
