NORTH NEWTON, KAN.-- The Bethel College women's basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the KCAC women's basketball postseason tournament with a 95-83 upset win over Southwestern College Thursday night in the quarterfinals at Stewart Field House in Winfield. They will travel to Bethany Colelge in one semifinal match up at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday. Juniors Danielle Deschenes and Shelley Haug led the Threshers with 23 points apiece. They were joined by Tiffany DeHaven with 13 points, and Stephanee DeWald and Jamie Kessler's 10 points in double figures. Haug also grabbed a team high six rebounds.
For the game, the Threshers shot 59.6% from the field on 31 for 52 shooting, including 66.7% from three-point range on six for nine shooting. Deschenes came out of a shooting slump to shoot four for five from behind the arc to spark the Threshers. Bethel shot 87.1% (27 for 31) from the free throw line. The Threshers forced 20 Moundbuilder turnovers scoring 23 points of those miscues. Bethel fell down early 10-2, but roared back to lead by 15 points at the break 48-33. The Threshers extended their lead to 18 points during the second half. The 'Builders got within nine with 21 seconds left, but that was as close as they would get down the stretch. Bethel scored their final 15 points from the free throw line.
In other quarterfinal action, third seed Tabor College defeated sixth seed McPherson College 72-57, top seed Bethany College defeated eighth seed Friends University 60-52, and second seed Sterling College defeated seventh seed Saint Mary College 86-47. Sterling hosts Tabor in the other women's semifinal on Saturday.
