NORTH NEWTON, KAN. - Bethel College Cindi S. Smith, a social work major from Hutchinson, received the Thresher Award in Social Work during the college's annual Awards Convocation May 12. The convocation, held at the end of each spring semester, recognizes academic excellence.
The Thresher Award is given to graduating seniors for outstanding and sustained contribution in performance areas, for outstanding creative achievement in the applied sciences, or for completion of an outstanding and substantial academic project.
This award for excellence in social work practice and research is given to recognize a senior whose field instruction performance and scholarly work exemplify the ideal social work professional.
"Cindi has demonstrated both the art and science of social work by creatively developing practice interventions and research that integrate theory with practice. She is exactly the kind of student we will be proud to claim as a Bethel College social work graduate," says Bethel College social work professor Ada Schmidt-Tieszen.
Smith's year-long senior research project with older widows adds new insights about growth associated with loss and builds on the pioneering fields of resiliency and grief, according to Schmidt-Tieszen. Smith is completing a field placement with Harry Hynes Memorial Hospice in Wichita.
Smith was one of seven graduating seniors to receive Thresher Awards this year.
