NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – Bethel College student Kate Fry’s senior art show is now on display in the Regier Art Gallery in Luyken Fine Arts Center.
The show opened May 5 and includes photographs and posters by Fry, Milford, Nebraska, who will graduate May 21 with a bachelor’s degree in art. She also studied graphic design.
The reception for the show is May 19, 7-9 p.m. outside the gallery.
“I have been told countless times that photography is easy,” Fry said in her artist statement. “While it may not be rocket science, a lot goes into taking a decent image. … You cannot always rely on ‘Auto.’
“I decided to take the ‘photography is easy’ comments and show all the bad photos I have. I could snap 100 pictures and only two of them are good enough to use. The lighting could be off, the subject is out of focus, or something is blurry. But all of these mistakes eventually get changed and I have the opportunity to catch a great photo.
“Photography is time-consuming, and I am constantly struggling for perfection. … After sifting through all the terrible photos I have, I am reminded why I love photography when I find that perfect image.”
In addition to photography, Fry has several posters on display, designed for a Bethel summer camp and a 2018 academic conference, among others.
Fry studied with David Long, professor of visual art and design, Rachel Epp Buller, associate professor of visual art and design, Pamela Pancake, assistant professor of visual art and design, and Donalyn Manion, instructor in graphic design.
She is a 2013 graduate of Milford High School, and the daughter of Angel and Jason Freeman of Milford, and Josh and Sara Fry of Mountain View, California.
Regular Regier Gallery hours are Monday-Friday, 9 a.m.-5 p.m., and Sunday, 2-4 p.m. Extra hours for commencement weekend are Saturday, May 21, 9 a.m.-5 p.m. There is no admission charge.
