Pinning ceremony honors nursing graduates

NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – The annual pinning ceremony for Bethel College nursing majors recognizes all graduating seniors and includes special awards.

The event takes place on commencement weekend, this year on May 17.

Michelle Unruh, junior from Goessel, provided a piano prelude. After graduating senior Ariel Silva, Colorado Springs, Colorado, offered an invocation and outgoing Director of Nursing Phyllis Miller gave a welcome, there was special music by the women’s a cappella group Woven, of which Silva and Unruh are members.

The speaker was Geraldine Tyrell, assistant professor of nursing and newly appointed director of nursing. Following her address came the presentation of special awards.

The Janlee Blosser Maternal Child Nursing Award, named to honor the memory of a deceased director of nursing, went to Whitney Cunningham, McPherson.

The Bethel Deaconess Hospital/Bethel College Nursing Alumni Association Florence Nightingale Student Recognition Award went to Ariel Silva.

Lacy Smith-McIntyre, Wichita, and Michelle Scheer, Colwich, were winners of Jubilee Awards.

The Doris and Menno Schmidt Donor Advised Fund of the Hutchinson Community Foundation Award for Excellence in Nursing went to Sarah Bell, Newton.

Twenty graduating seniors received nursing pins: Madeline Baumgartner, Silver Spring, Maryland; Sarah Bell; Marissa Bontrager, North Newton; Whitney Cunningham; Naura Harlow, Satanta; Erin Hilger, Hutchinson; Jessica Miller, Hesston; Ashley Morris, Wichita; Scott Musgrave, McPherson; Kristen Olsen, Wichita; Alexis Renteria, Wichita; Angela Robinson, Hutchinson; Julia Rojas, Newton; Michelle Scheer; Ariel Silva; Lacy Smith-McIntyre; Mia Stroble, Hutchinson; Hollie Tabor, Wichita; Ashley Wasserman, Valley Center; and Raeanne Yoder, Newton.

Baumgartner shared “Senior Moments,” memories of the Class of 2014, and Bontrager gave a prayer of benediction.

Bethel nursing faculty, in addition to Miller and Tyrell are, are: Donna Becker, assistant professor of nursing; Nancy Ciskey, associate professor of nursing; Nancy Lugo-Baez, assistant professor of nursing; Sarah Masem, assistant professor of nursing; Laura Prahm, adjunct clinical instructor of nursing; Bobbi Schrag, adjunct clinical instructor of nursing; and Paulette Wollenhaupt, instructor of nursing.
