MLA exhibit features Flags in Mennonite Spaces

September 11th, 2017

NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – Staff at the Mennonite Library and Archives (MLA) at Bethel College have put together an exhibit of Flags in Mennonite Spaces. Nearly all of the 48 images, which are currently on display at the MLA, are from the library's collection. MLA director John Thiesen decided to display the flag images when he noticed flags in various MLA files while working on other projects. He found images of flags used in churches, schools and colleges, Civilian Public Service camps and other settings. Nearly all are U.S. flags. Others are country flags of Brazil and Paraguay.

The photos on display show flag images over a period of 100 years. The oldest one is a U.S. flag atop the Bethel College Administration Building after its 1893 dedication. The most recent shows the flag flying from the flagpole at Bethel College earlier this year.

MLA hours are 10 a.m. to noon and 1 to 5 p.m. Monday through Thursday. The MLA is also open 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on the first and third Thursdays of each month. Admission is free and open to the public. For information, call (316) 284-5304.

The flags can also be seen on a website at
