NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – Bethel College student Matthew Graber will give his senior piano recital Nov. 13 at 3 p.m. in the Administration Building chapel.
Graber, of Freeman, South Dakota, is a student of Karen Bauman Schlabaugh, Bethel professor of music.
He will graduate in May 2017 with a degree in music.
On Graber’s program are Eight Variations in F Major by Ludwig van Beethoven; Danzas Argentinas, Opus 2, by Alberto Ginastera; two of the Four Fantasies on American Folk Songs by Douglas Townsend (for four hands – Graber will be joined by Schlabaugh); “Prelude in D-flat Major, Opus 103” and “Barcarolle in A Minor, Opus 26” by Gabriel Fauré; and “Scherzo in B-flat Minor” by Frédéric Chopin.
Graber is a 2013 graduate of Freeman Academy. He is the son of Kerwin and Robin Graber of Freeman.
For all four years, Graber has been a member of the Bethel College Concert Choir and the men’s a cappella ensemble Open Road.
He serves as a Concert Choir accompanist, and this year is the recipient of the Walter H. Hohmann Choral Conducting Scholarship. He has been the choir director at Grace Hill Mennonite Church in rural Newton for the past three years.
Graber has played keyboard for Bethel College Jazz Ensemble I for three years, percussion for the Bethel College Wind Ensemble for two years, and keyboard for Jazz Combo II for one year. He is a founding member of the student bluegrass band The Flannelbacks.
Graber’s Nov. 13 recital is free and open to the public. A reception will follow in The Meeting Place on the ground floor of the Administration Building.
