NORTH NEWTON, KAN. Mathematician David S. Ross, Rochester, N.Y., will present two lectures in a series sponsored by the mathematical science departments of the Associated Colleges of Central Kansas. Ross will speak on "Mathematical Models of MEMS Devices" at 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 2, room 203 of the Science Hall at Bethel College in North Newton. The talk will focus on microscopic machines built on computer chips.
Ross will also present "Mathematics and Photography" at 7 p.m., Monday, March 1 in lecture hall 112, Melhorn Science Hall, McPherson College in McPherson. He will describe, from a mathematician's perspective, the science and engineering of photography.
A professor of mathematics at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), Ross joined the faculty in 2001 after spending 15 years as an industrial mathematician at Eastman Kodak Research Labs. He has also taught at New York University and the University of Rochester. His research interests are in partial differential equations applied to problems in continuum mechanics.
He has published papers in mathematics and applied science journals on various scientific topics, including aerodynamics through computer chip fabrication, photographic science and surface chemistry. Ross also has an interest in philosophy and the epistemological foundations of math, a topic on which he has lectured and written.
He authored the book "Mathematical Models in Photographic Science" (with Avner Friedman, Springer-Verlag, 2003).
Ross earned his bachelor's degree at Columbia University and his doctorate at Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences, New York University.
