Martinez is first Bethel harrier to make Preseason All-KCAC Team

NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – When the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference cross-country coaches announced their selections for the 2017 Preseason All-KCAC Men’s Team Aug. 14, Bethel College’s Julio Martinez was on that list.

The group is made up of the top returning runners of 2016, including Martinez, a senior from Phoenix.

This is Martinez’s first time being selected to the preseason team, and the first runner to have achieved this status under Jeff Hoskisson, Bethel head cross-country coach.

Martinez had a highly successful junior campaign in 2016. This included being named KCAC Runner of the Week after his second-place finish at the Warrior Invitational at Sterling College last September.

Martinez won the Threshers’ home meet in October.

His 13th-place finish at the 2016 KCAC Championships earned Martinez a trip to the NAIA Cross Country National Championships, the first male runner in program’s history to do so.

This year, Martinez will be on the trails looking to create a bigger splash, and earn some more hardware.

The 2017 KCAC Preseasons All-KCAC Men’s Cross-Country Team includes, in addition to Martinez, five runners from the University of St. Mary and one each from Kansas Wesleyan University, McPherson College and Southwestern College.

Bethel College ranks at No. 1 in College Consensus’ ranking of Kansas colleges and universities, and is the only Kansas private college listed in the Forbes.com analysis of top colleges and universities, for 2017-18. The four-year liberal arts college is affiliated with Mennonite Church USA. For more information, see www.bethelks.edu.
