NORTH NEWTON, KAN. Julie Hart, associate professor of sociology at Bethel College, will speak on "Grassroots peacebuilding in post-war Guatemala" at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 10 in the Administration Building Chapel, Bethel College. The lecture is part of the 2003-04 Faculty Seminar Series at Bethel College. Admission is free and open to the public. Hart's presentation will describe Guatemala's recent history and civil war and emphasize the challenges for sustainable peacebuilding in a country where a 36-year civil war ended in 1996. The lecture will include three current models of peacebuilding that Hart became familiar with during the last two years when she lived and worked in Guatemala during a sabbatical from Bethel College.
Her lecture will focus on strategies used by the Catholic and Mennonite churches in Guatemala as well as the United Nations and Organization of American States.
Hart holds a master's degree in international peace studies and a doctoral degree in sociology from Notre Dame University. She has taught at Bethel College since 1994.
