NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – Back in competition with the start of the spring 2017 semester, the Bethel College forensics team came home from Nebraska with a 3rd-place sweepstakes trophy and another event qualified to nationals.
The University of Nebraska-Lincoln and Kansas State University hosted the Kansas in Nebraska Swing Jan. 28-29 on the UNL campus.
On both days, Bethel was one of 12 colleges and universities in competition.
On Day 1, with K-State hosting, Jacob Miller, senior from Westmoreland, was 1st in Communication Analysis (CA) and 4th in Informative Speaking.
Candy Dao, sophomore from Salina, took 6th in Program Oral Interpretation (POI) and “Next Out” in Prose Interpretation, while Emily Kondziola, sophomore from North Newton, was “Next Out” in Extemporaneous Speaking.
Also competing and adding to Bethel’s accumulated points were Clinton Unruh, senior from Newton, Shekhinah Jones, junior from Salina, and Akiyaa Hagen, freshman from Salina.
With another 1st place on Day 2 (hosted by UNL), this one in Informative, Miller qualified that event to the American Forensic Association National Individual Events Tournament (AFA-NIET), bringing his total of events qualified thus far to five.
Miller also finished 2nd in Persuasion and was “Next Out” in CA.
Unruh took 2nd in Extemp, while Hagen was 3rd in Prose and “Next Out” in Poetry Interpretation.
Jones finished 5th in Poetry and 6th in POI, Dao 5th in Dramatic Interpretation and “Next Out” in POI, and Kondziola 5th in Extemp.
The Threshers have now qualified four students in 10 events to AFA-NIET, which takes place April 1-3 at Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois.
