Esses accepts NCAA Division I assistant coaching position
NORTH NEWTON, KAN. – Bethel College head women’s basketball coach Adam Esses has announced he will become lead assistant for a Division I women’s basketball program. His resignation is effective July 7.
"While we wanted to be transparent with our local community, we’re respecting the wishes of the hiring institution to hold the team name until after the holiday," Tony Hoops, athletic director, said.
In his one season as Bethel head coach, Esses’ team finished ahead of pre-season predictions, winning three of the last six games. He coached seven Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) Scholar-Athletes, with Elise Gerlach, graduating senior from Mulvane, and Kylee Schunn, senior from Whitewater, named NAIA Daktronics Scholar-Athletes.
“I have truly enjoyed my time being a part of the Bethel College family,” Esses said. “It has been great to continue my professional development at Bethel, as I have gained invaluable experiences.”
Esses came to Bethel in 2016 from Kaskaskia College, a two-year school in Centralia, Illinois, where he had been head women’s basketball coach and athletic director since 2014. Before that, he was assistant women’s basketball coach at Upper Iowa University, Fayette, 2010-14.
The Littleton, Colorado, native is a 2008 graduate of Bethany College, Lindsborg, with a B.A. in secondary math education. He earned his M.S.Ed. in mathematics/science education from the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
“While only here for a year, I commend Coach Esses for the job he did, given the tough situation he was in being a late hire last July,” Hoops said. “Adam leaves the program in a better place, that his successor will continue to be able to build upon.
“I hate to see Adam leave as a colleague and friend, but he’s been granted a unique opportunity for which I wish him the best.”
Hoops has begun a national search to secure a coach for Bethel’s 2017 basketball season.
