Bethel Men's Basketball advances to semifinals

NORTH NEWTON, KAN.--The Bethel College men's basketball team advanced to the semifinals of the KCAC men's basketball postseason tournament with a 94-87 win over Kansas Wesleyan University Wednesday night in the quarterfinals at Thresher Gym. They will host Tabor College in one semifinal match up at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday. Senior Chez McGavock led the Threshers with 20 points and 11 assists. He was followed by Brett Esau with 18 points, Garry Albright's 16 points, Adrian Howie's 15 points, and Frank Flores' 13 points as all Thresher starters scored in double digits. Howie also pulled down 10 rebounds to join McGavock with a double-double on the night.

For the game, the Threshers shot 60.4% from the field on 32 for 53 shooting, including 54.5% from three-point range on six for 11 shooting. Albright came out of a season long shooting slump to shoot four for five from behind the arc to spark the Threshers. Bethel struggled from the free throw line, shooting 63.2% (24 for 38), which kept the game close. The Threshers forced 24 Coyote turnovers, scoring 27 points off those miscues.

In other quarterfinal action, fourth seed Tabor College defeated fifth seed Southwestern College 57-55, third seed Bethany College defeated sixth seed McPherson College 92-79, and seventh seed Ottawa University upset second seed Sterling College 72-64 in overtime. Bethany will host Ottawa in the other men's semifinal on Saturday.
