NORTH NEWTON, KAN. Bethel College Sinfonia will present its fall concert at 7:30 p.m., Monday, Nov. 17 in Memorial Hall on the Bethel College campus in North Newton. Christopher Koch will conduct the Sinfonia for the first time. He joined the Bethel College music faculty in August after a move from Washington state where he completed his doctor of musical arts degree in conducting at the University of Washington in late spring. The program will include Stravinsky's "Scherzo a la Russe," Franck's "Huit Pieces Breve," Rimsky-Korsakov's "Dance of the Tumblers" from "The Snow Maiden," Grainger's "The Immovable Do," and Dvorak's "Serenade in d minor."
The 45-member Sinfonia brings together Bethel College students and faculty, Hesston College students and also community musicians from Newton and Peabody.
"I am delighted to have joined the Bethel College community and am very much looking forward to our performance on the 17th," Koch says. "This concert begins a season of fantastic literature which will include Bedrich Smetana's 'The Bartered Bride,' widely considered to be the 'Czech national opera,' and Aaron Copland's masterful 'Appalachian Spring' in its original iteration for 13 instruments."
Koch encourages other community and area musicians to contact him if they are interested in joining the Sinfonia.
Koch is assistant professor of music at Bethel College. He completed his bachelor's degree in flute performance and music education at Eastman School of Music and earned master's degrees in flute performance and orchestral conducting at the University of Missouri-Kansas City Conservatory of Music. He has national and international experience as a flutist, conductor and music director, including positions in Washington, Colorado, New York, Kansas City and Australia.
Admission is free and open to the public. Contributions to the Bethel College Music Department will be accepted.
