Book Review Topic Proposal Guidelines (200 level)

1. Identify the book and general area or major question that you will be addressing in the review.

2. Specify the principal argument that you will be attempting to make, the thesis that you will defend, the stand that you will take. Even though this will probably change as you develop the paper, it is important right at the outset to have some argument in mind as you brainstorm, collect data, read through journal articles and books. You may be as general or specific as you like in the way you phrase your argument at this point, although you should keep in mind that you will probably be narrowing its scope, if not changing it completely as you develop the paper. And lastly, even though it is not necessary at this time, you might offer some initial rationale (`because statements') for the argument. You'll have to do this sooner or later, and the sooner you get into the `whys', the better!

3. Clarify your personal motivation for doing this project. Was it someone you knew, you yourself, an experience you've had, intellectual curiosity, or what? It is very important at the outset to get a handle on any biases or prejudices that you may have so that you can keep yourself as intellectually honest as possible.

4. Length should be around one-half to one full typewritten double-spaced page.
