Megan Fowler

Hometown: La Junta, Colorado
Class of 2011

What’s your major? Why did you choose it?

Athletic Training and Health & Physical Education--I chose them because I enjoy sports medicine and exercise science. In high school, I always thought it would be fun to be somewhere in the sports medicine area, and plus, being around athletes and sports for a job, who wouldn't enjoy that?!

What brought you to Bethel?

I knew that a huge university was the last place I wanted to be at. My sister graduated from Bethel and I always wanted to follow her footsteps, but then the closer I looked at Bethel the more I felt a "fit," and it was one of the very few colleges that I was interested in that had Athletic Training and Health & PE as majors.

What activities have you been involved in?

SAA, wind ensemble my freshmen year

How are you different now from when you first arrived on campus?

I have seen myself approach situations in a mature manner rather than the "fighting until I get my way" approach. I have also learned to apply the knowledge I have gained while being at Bethel, which I feel has made me grow up in more ways than one.

For what are you most proud of Bethel?

I have always appreciated how willing most professors are to work with students in order to understand an assignment or prepare for an exam; some make themselves as available as possible by even giving out home phone numbers. I feel it's because of that willingness and encouragement of professors that make Bethel a top tier college.

How would you like to see Bethel change or improve in the next five years?

More foreign language classes (French, Swahili, Greek, just to name a few)

What has been your favorite course so far, and why?

Exercise Physiology because I love to know how the body functions during exercise and what exactly the body is doing down to the cellular level during different activities. I also enjoyed learning the difference in training for specific events and how the cardiovascular system responds long-term to certain types of exercise.

Tell a quick story about a memorable moment from your Bethel days.

A few weeks ago I was on the sideline of a soccer game and a player went down on the opposite sideline. Jessica (the head trainer) ran across the field first and I went to find the player's water bottle and took off across the field after her. But, I am far from a sprinter and the ref blew the whistle to start the game again while I was only about 12 yards towards the other side of the field. So I kept running towards Jessica and the player while the game was going on (but thankfully I did not get hit by the ball or another player). I have been reminded many times of this happening by others.

What does it mean to be a Thresher?

As a Thresher, I am a supporter of fellow Threshers: I try to go to as many athletic games as I can, I make an effort to go to theatrical plays and the spring musical/opera, and other concerts throughout the year. Of course this becomes rather difficult at times, but I feel it is necessary to support others in order to get that same support in return and thus creating a sense of community.
